Quilts of Valor® Foundation is a national nonprofit nonpolitical volunteer organization founded by Catherine Roberts in November 2003. Its mission is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Originally, QOVs were given only to injured active military returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, but the guidelines were broadened to include all active military and other service veterans, regardless of the conflict (declared or otherwise) and regardless of whether the veteran has been in combat or not. As of April 30, 2024, more than 380,000 QOVs have been awarded and registered in the US and in our military hospitals in Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Qatar.

A Quilt of Valor is considered to be the civilian equivalent of a military award; it is a lifetime award (only one per person) and is never "passed out" or "handed over", but always individually awarded. Quilts of Valor does not provide quilts to organizations for permanent public display or to serve as bed covers for hospital beds. Quilts of Valor cannot be purchased and cannot be sold; we do not expect any donation of any kind whatsoever when we award a Quilt of Valor.

To become a member of our QOVF-registered group, Northwest Quilters QOV Volunteers, please contact the coordinator; the cost is $10 per year per person PLUS approximately $2 per person toward the group registration fee. (That additional fee may change slightly year-to-year, depending on how many members we have in our group.) OR you can join the Foundation individually for a $40 annual fee, through the QOVF website (www.QOVF.org/membership). To set up your own QOVF group, the cost is $75 per year for group registration plus $10 per year per person, with a minimum of 2 persons.

Our group, Northwest Quilters QOV Volunteers, meets year-round on the last Monday of the month and the Tuesday that follows. Pre-registration is required due to space constraints. You can either bring a QOV project to work on or help with a group project. Bring a sewing machine and your regular small notions if you want to piece. If you would like to hand-sew binding and we have quilts at that stage, your hand-sewing is welcome. If you prefer to cut kits or press for others, that opportunity is usually available as well. If you are new to sewing, this is a great place to learn. We sew from 10:00 until 3:00 and have a coordinated lunch at noon. For more information, please email the coordinator.
