Colour Literacy: Expanding from 2D to 3D Color

Throw out your color wheel and forget traditional color theory. Understanding how colors are organized in 3D is at the heart of working well with color. Following a short talk covering the basics of color perception and color order systems, we will explore color sorting with a digital game developed for the international Colour Literacy Project and then build a simple model of color to take home and use as a 3D reference.

Members should bring scissors for cutting cardstock (not your good fabric scissors!) and a good (not washable) glue stick for building your model.

You may also bring your smart phone or tablet for hands on access to the color sorting digital game. CHROMO LINK

BIO

Maggie Maggio

As a designer, artist, and art educator, I have studied, taught and worked with color for over thirty years. My personal explorations into the science of light and pigments led to the creation of workshops for artists and designers who are interested in incorporating the latest research in color science into their creative practice. Influenced by my eye-opening experiences while teaching around the world, I now focus on expanding and exploring how color is taught at all ages by advocating for a meta-disciplinary, experiential approach to learning about color in the twenty-first century. Hands-on color explorations are both fun and informative!

My specific area of interest, and current research topic, is concentrated on designing a simple framework for introducing 3D color models in early color education worldwide.
