NWQ's own Helene Knott is teaching a brand new 6-hour design focus workshop on Saturday, March 18, 2017. The workshop is entitled "Through the Lens." Helene has completed the class design and when samples and the supply lists are ready, all details will be posted at www.heleneknott.com

Or click here to print/download the supply list.

Through the Lens: Creating a beautiful design is a process of assembling forms into a pleasing arrangement taking aspects such as balance and composition into consideration. This is true of any design whether representational or abstract. Some people have an intuitive sense and skill for combining shapes and line into compositions of emotion or beauty, but for many the distractions of image identity and lack of 'drawing skills' may interfere with the creative process. My college art professor used to say, "The moment you decide to draw a fish, the fish is dictating what it should look like". He taught us a process of isolating and simplifying design elements of an image to remove all those instructions; to be able to see the elements of composition as a series of movement and form. He called this process 'Discovery Designs'. In this class, I will teach you this method of 'discovering' an abstract design from a represetational image and creating your own unique pattern for a quilt.

Northwest Quilters' Spring 2017 Retreat
Thursday, March 2 through Sunday, March 5, 2017

Mark your calendar for the Northwest Quilters' Spring Retreat at Tilikum Retreat Center. We will gather on Thursday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 5th for another wonderful retreat. NWQ's Spring Retreat is always well attended, which means you should send in your registration as soon as possible. Attendance is limited to 38 to ensure a lower bed for everyone and plenty of room in the upper and lower work spaces.

Tilikum Retreat Center is just five miles outside of Newberg, Oregon in a beautiful location with comfortable accommodations, great food, and a very caring staff. The 92-acre campus is surrounded by vineyards and hazelnut orchards which will be putting on a Spring show. Tilikum grounds offer hiking trails around a large lake with beautiful vistas in every direction. Retreat time is always special, working with other quilters, where you renew old friendships and make new ones.

There are three retreat options: (1) arrive after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 2nd for a cost of $220.00 which includes Thursday dinner, full breakfast, lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday and a full brunch on Sunday morning (8 meals). (2) Arrive on Friday morning March 3rd anytime after 9:00 a.m. for a cost of $190.00 which includes lunch and dinner on Friday, three meals on Saturday and a full brunch on Sunday morning (6 meals). (3) Arrive on Friday after lunch time and join fellow retreaters for dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday and a brunch on Sunday for a cost of $185.00.

You will need to bring your own bed linens and towels--pillows and blankets are provided. Other items you will need to bring: Project(s), sewing machine supplies (including cords and foot pedal), and maybe a special quilt to personalize your room. Cutting mats, irons, steamers and ironing boards are provided in each workroom. NWQ retreats offer enriching experiences and we welcome your participation!

Early registrations are helpful for planning and making the best use of our limited resources. Registrations will be accepted on a first come/first served basis for a maximum of 38 participants. A minimum deposit of $75.00 is required along with a completed registration form with any remaining balance due no later than FEBRUARY 16, 2017. Refunds (minus a $10 handling fee) will NOT be given after February 16th and then ONLY if we can fill your reservation. All information will be sent via e-mail unless you include a self-addressed, stamped business-size (4"x9") envelope with your registration.

If you have questions, contact Carol Hull or Jo Ann Janes.
