A quilter for more than 30 years and a former president of Northwest Quilters, Suzette Shoulders learned to embroider from her mother at the age of 3. After she became a quilter in the Ď70s, she took some fancy embellishment classes in the Ď80s from Rita Zerull and Gerda Rasmussen of California that she incorporated into her style of crazy-patchwork. Her work has been shown at Northwest Quilters and Columbia Stitchery Guild shows in the Portland area, in the Pioneer Quilters Guild show in Eugene, at the Jenkins Estate in Aloha, and in Bay Area shows sponsored by the Marin Needlearts Guild. She was the featured quilter at the NWQ Show in May 2003, displaying an extensive collection of her own quilts and garments created over a 25-year span. She also collects antique crazy-patch quilts and enjoys sharing them with receptive audiences.
Suzette began teaching crazy-patch in 1983 for the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District and was the crazy-patch teacher at Daisy Kingdom for 5 years, until Daisy Kingdom discontinued class programs in December 1994. For 6 years she taught crazy-patch and silk ribbon embroidery for The Quilt Shoppe in West Linn. She has also taught embroidery, beaded embroidery, marbleizing fabrics, and dimensional embellishments for quilters. She has taught crazy-patch workshops for Quiltersí Anonymous Guild in Seattle and for the Marin Needlearts Guild in California, a silk ribbon embroidery workshop at the Ocean Waves Quilt Camp on the Oregon Coast, and a crazy-patch workshop at BJís Festival of Classes in Bend. Since relocating to central Oregon in late 2001, she has taught at Mountain Country Mercantile in Bend and in fall 2003 she taught crazy-patch at Alston Hall College in Lancashire, England. She also has authored and performed a one-woman show based on the Oregon Trail journey of her maternal great-great-grandmother, Eliza Kingsbury Scotten Adams. Visit Suzette Shoulders' website.
Suzette will present a lecture, "Still Crazy After All These Years", at our general meeting on Monday morning, May 9. She will present one workshop while she is in Portland:
"Crazy for Crazy-Patch" -- Come learn this creative freestyle patchwork method and embellishment techniques from Suzette. Work in fancy fabrics or cottons, in colors of your choice, to make a one-of-a-kind small quilt or vest. You will learn the modern machine method of crazy-patch construction and can embellish to your heartís content with hand and/or machine stitchery, ribbons, buttons, and beads. Cautious beginners may choose to make a pillow! Suzette brings a large sharing box of satins, velveteens, and "silkies" to augment your chosen fabrics.
Deposits of $40 are required for registration; the balance is due April 29. The workshop is available to members and non-members, with preference to members until April 1. Refunds (minus a $10 handling fee) for cancellations will be given only if your spot can be filled. Please contact Maureen Orr Eldred by email if you have questions.
