Marjorie Lee Bevis

October 1 and 2, 2004

A quilter who began dyeing and marbling fabrics because she couldnít find all the colors she wanted to use in her quilts, MARJORIE LEE BEVIS trained and experimented with the process across a decade before journeying to Istanbul, Turkey, the 10th century home of the "Ebru" technique and the location of its current master. Since 1986 she has made her own one-of-a-kind fabrics and papers, incorporating Ebru methods since 1997. A past vendor for our quilt show, she has taught fabric dyeing and marbling across the U.S. and in Turkey, England, Denmark, and Holland. She also supplies fabrics for quilt shops and manufacturers from her home studio in Oakland, Oregon, and is in the process of writing her first book on this ancient technique and its modern evolution.

Marjorie Bevis will be our lecturer at the NWQ meeting on Monday morning, September 13th, bringing a selection of her dyed and marbled materials made into finished quilts and garments. She will return to teach two separate full-day classes on fabric marbling on Friday, October 1st, and Saturday, October 2nd. Both classes teach the same technique in the same format. Each class must have a minimum of 9 students, with no more than 14 students in each. If we donít get the minimum in each class, we will combine classes (probably to Saturday). If we have more than the maximum for either class as of the end of the September meeting (Monday morning, September 13), we will select 14 students by a drawing at the Board Meeting (which follows the general meeting, and which is open to any member of NWQ); all applicants will be notified by phone that day.

The cost will be $115.00 per person for members ($135 for non-members), which includes all materials and supplies, including 10 all-cotton fabric pieces, each approximately fat-quarter size (slightly smaller, to fit the marbling trays); four of these will be white and six will be hand-dyed, but all of them will be pretreated for marbling and ready to begin processing at the beginning of the class. This class fee also includes lunch.

Deposits of $60 will be required for registration, with the balance due September 20. Application is limited to NWQ members until after September 12. Refunds (minus a $10 handling fee) will be given only for cancellations before September 12 or if your spot can be filled. (If we must hold a drawing, full refunds will be given to all those whose names are not drawn.) Please call or email Maureen Orr Eldred if you have questions. Contact information is in the roster.
